Built with a forged calliper body, the Ultegra BR-R8170 combines low weight with excellent rigidity for confident braking performance in all conditions. The opposed 2-piston design helps reduce leading effect and promotes even pad wear, giving smoother control and consistent stopping power on fast descents, wet roads and demanding rides.
Oversized 22mm ceramic pistons are optimised for heat insulation, stiffness and low weight, helping maintain performance during prolonged braking. Increased pad-to-rotor clearance reduces the chance of rotor rub, while the direct flat mount and open calliper design make wheel removal and installation quick and simple.
Shimano’s one-way internal fluid circuit, separate bleed port and valve screw all help make the bleeding process easier and cleaner. The calliper uses Shimano mineral oil brake fluid, which is non-corrosive and less hazardous than conventional hydraulic brake fluids.
Supplied with resin compound aluminium radiation fin pads, the BR-R8170 improves heat dissipation and helps reduce brake surface temperature for more stable braking performance. For optimum braking, Shimano recommends pairing this calliper with Ice Tech FREEZA Center Lock SM-MT800 rotors.
